Robin, wishing you and Stu a safe, no car issue and much fun trip!!
Day 1 April 23, 2022
We headed out from home a few minutes after 9:00 am with a fully loaded car on a beautiful spring morning. Our first stop to take pictures was in Nitro, WV, which we knew was more than a day’s drive. We made our way over the Delaware Memorial Bridge and down Rt. 95 to just past Baltimore where we picked up Rt. 695 to 70 West. We stopped in Clarksville, MD for gas and lunch which was at an Afghani restaurant. After lunch we continued along Rt. 70 to Rt. 68 to Rt. 7. We decided to stop for the night in Weston, WV. Dinner was at Hickory House in Jan Lew, WV. The beef brisket was probably the best we have ever had. The meal was so good. Since this is on the way to Stu’s cousin’s new home in WV, I think we will be back for another meal sometime in the future. The rest of the evening was spent planning for Sunday and relaxing.
Day 2 April 24, 2022
We had breakfast provided by the Hampton Inn. Dashed across the street to Walmart to pick up some toys and a gift card and headed to see cousins. Even though I had told Stu we would be near where they live, he did not want to plan on going unless we had the time, so I did not pick up anything at home. It was only 40 miles, but very, very winding roads with no shoulder in the middle of mountainous nowhere West Virginia. The whole county had less people than our school district. We spent about an hour and half with them. It was sad not having his cousin there as she passed away suddenly in January about a week after moving there, but we visited with her hubby and their son, his wife and the two little guys. The kids are so cute-we haven’t seen them since last summer and they have grown-the baby just turned one this week and the older one will be 4 this summer. Their new home has a lot of potential with many original details, but right now it is very, very rustic 100-year home on 7 acres.
After leaving there, we drove back to the main highway and we grabbed some awful lunch a few exits down. We headed toward Lexington, KY, but first we stopped in various places for Stu to take pictures of the car with various oddities along the way-a Paul Bunyan with Babe, a pink and green giraffe and a giant mug of root beer. We got stuck for 25 minutes on the highway while the fire department put a car fire out. Stopped for Mexican for dinner and are now settled in our hotel on the north side of Lexington.
A few notes: Stereotypical WV does exist, at least in the parts we were in. Kentucky is very beautiful.
Sounds like you are having a nice start to your trip! Glad you were able to visit with family and it certainly seems like there was a lot to see along the way. Safe and fun travels!!
