MG suv

When we were in Aruba in May (seems like forever ago) we saw quite a few (more than 10) different SUVs.
Upon closer inspection the brand was MG. Each on had an A license plate/tag (resident)

It looked like a pretty interesting vehicle........kind of small, similar to a Rav4, maybe smaller.


When I was a teen, I always wanted an MG.

We rented an MG car from Thrifty last trip. It was similar to a Camry. I was not familiar with the brand but it was nice.

They were a cool car when I was young and they were a cute sports car. Not cheap either.

I loved the MG, but there was no way my dad would let me get one. He was afraid I'd end up under a tractor trailer. I think he watched too many cop shows.

MG is actually made in China now but designed by the British. I had a two seater in the early 70's very similar to Robin's Photo. The MG (Morris Garages) used to be part of the British Leyland group in the late 60's and stand alone prior to that since mid 20's. The brand has gone through a number of mergers and acquisitions over the years. I loved the one I had...… and yes, the SUV in Aruba is definitely smaller than the American Rav4.

I owned two of them, the MGB. The first was 1978, second was a 1980. The first one I bought, I didn't know how to drive because it was a stick shift so my friend taught me. My father thought I was crazy buying a car I didn't know how to drive and that it was too expensive, $5,000. Of course now we laugh at that price for a brand new car. Then it got totaled, bought another one. First one was green, second one was black. I LOVED that car. My friend who taught me to drive bought the MG midget, it was like being in a box. I am not sure that you could survive in a crash in that car.

Mine was the blue with that 'baby diaper' yellow interior! I remember driving on cold days with the tonneau cover over the passenger seat and the heat blasting so my body would be warm!

My friend's sister had a yellow MGB. My dad would not even let her take me for ride around the block and she was 10 years older than me.

I've seen some classic (30's to early 60's)MG's at car shows and they are really cool too.

I was surprised to see what they had in Aruba now. Nothing like the classic cars-all the modern cars look similar these days.

My uncle had a gas station at the time and of course the car was always breaking down. When I would come in, the guys who worked there would cringe since they had no choice fixing it. My uncle use to say your first clue not to buy this car is it had 3 windshield wipers and the windshield was so small. he said that should have been your first clue, lol. Yes, it was British Leyland who made them, bought it at the dealership that sold MG's and Rolls Royces.
