Thank you so much to my forum friends for your support and thoughtfulness. Tomorrow will mark 5 weeks in ICU. Yesterday was her best day by far and the first indication she could move to a transitional unit then on for long term rehab. She was breathing on her own for 28 hours without a ventilator! She also is able to hold a hairbrush and toothbrush, but is still learning to operate them. For now there is no indication that she will walk again, but we are hopeful that every day will bring more progress.
Glad to hear of your step mom’s progress. Moving to transitional care is a positive step. Continued prayers for you and your family
I knew I had not posted an update in a while, but I did not realize it had been this long. For About 2 months there were no major changes health wise. On Nov.6th, my step mother was released from the hospital to go home to begin her new journey. She is paralyzed from the chest down. She has movement in her arms, but not much control over her hands. She is in a power wheelchair and will be for the rest of her life. She was not strong enough for an intense long term rehabilitation program. She had rehab, just not at one of the spinal injury centers we were hoping for. She has a tough path ahead. She needs round the clock care and her son and daughter have been leading the decision making with that. After being at her son's home for a little over a week,, where they felt she could be best cared for, she has been hospitalized again with some type of infection. Her breathing is not the best, she requires oxygen at night and other times intermittently. Things are going one day at a time. I wish the news was better, but this is life. My dad, who is mostly blind is doing okay. Its a challenge with blended families and adult children and the added stress of a life changing disability and other health issues.
We will be okay, mentally I need this Aruba trip and I think my dad needs a break from me constantly trying to take care of him...LOL.
Thanks everyone for your kind thoughts and prayers.
Sorry to hear this update on your stepmom. She is facing so many challenges. It must be tremendously stressful for all who are trying to help and manage her care. Please know your family is in our thoughts and prayers.
