I remember ducking in the cloak room with our hands over our heads.
ahhhhh memories of 2nd and 3rd grade.

so, our DIL came home today from her inservice training .......leading up to first day of school.
yup, they did active shooter drills today and then when the kids arrive, it will be done every 8 weeks.

what has this miserable world become?

When I first started teaching we had two fire drills a month. By the time I retired, we were doing one fire drill and one other drill-usually lockdown/active shooter drill. But we also had bomb scare(go to the road), shelter in place-two types-one we stayed in our own rooms and went about our day but did not leave the building and the other we went into a room without windows but kept lights on and could talk but could not leave(we never practiced these two but they were used when there were fires on the streets near the building, a rabid animal on the grounds, and if they needed to use the school grounds for medical helicopter landings), chemical spill-everyone went into the cafeteria and the air handlers were shut off-we were about 1/2 mile to the railroad tracks and derailment was a concern, escape-we went to the back of the playground-used in a situation we would have to leave the building, such as a chemical spill in the building, natural gas leak or broken water pipes, etc. They were all different and we had cheat sheets if needed.

Please take a few moments tomorrow to remember and honor all those lost (and are still losing due to illness) on 9/11. Life goes on but we must never forget.

Congressman Elijah Cummings of Maryland. A true patriot and one of the last living civil rights activists to march along side Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. A tremendous loss of a great man and statesman that is so desperately needed in this country these days-and too young (68).
