Not a day goes by that we don’t hear about more violence. It’s a different world unfortunately.
Yes Andrea - there are no words. I live near NY and there is so much violence - I’m sure you heard on the subways too. And now there are shootings throughout the US as well almost daily! Horrific!
That is one of the reasons my wife and I choose to invest our money last year in Aruba to spend our retirement.I told her well over year ago this country was in trouble - boy was that an understatement! Love Florida and Hawaii, but there both still in the US. We are looking forward to living in a beautiful country of diverse people who generally don't care who you voted for. We've been to Aruba 5 times in little over year, and we have yet to turn on out TV, no need to.
To quote Robert Kennedy from his speech on Martin Luther King's death:
"Let us dedicate ourselves to what the Greek wrote so many years ago: to tame the savageness of man and make gentle the life of this world. Let us dedicate ourselves to that, and say a prayer for our country and for our people."
Unfortunately that seems to have fallen on deaf ears. I too am considering retiring outside the US.
We are in Florida and are within a 30 minute drive of a hub of white supremacy compounds.
It is ugly in certain sections of Florida.........including North Polk Co.

The shootings happen and each time it becomes 'business as usual' within a couple of days as the media stops covering it.... and then another one happens.... sad. And yet, nothing is ever done.... nothing.....
A little nonsense now and then is relished by the best of men!
It should be noted that Aruba has its own fair share of party extremists. Mostly between fringe MEP supporters and a wider range of AVP supporters. This rivalry has always been the case, but AVP has taken it up several notches in recent years, having 3 ex-ministers either sentenced or under investigation for fraud, corruption, bribes, forming part of a criminal organization etc etc.
It reached peak national embarrassment when ex prime minister, the populist Mike Eman called upon his supporters to vote for Benny Sevinger, at that point locked up under said charges(investigation still ongoing). This from the party that rose our debt to GDP from a very healthy 45% to over 90% in 7 years of governance from 2010-2007. We have our very own FOX news(24ora) who just like in the US, works and receives talking points directly from the AVP party.
When asked to defend their actions, they went from denying everything, to saying "but everyone is as corrupt as us", to saying "the justice department is compromised and its a witchhunt because its only us getting arrested". For those that know how our justice system works, the latter is an incredibly stupid thing to say. Lastly, they tried with everything they have to fight the results of the 2021 election. This all may sound eerily familiar to the last few years of a certain orange figure
Even after all of this, they STILL received 32% of the valid votes, which in our parliamentary system means they finished 2nd, just 2 seats less than the winner, MEP(total 21 seats). This shows you how big their base is and how much they follow their sweet talking leader, no matter how much disaster they've caused or how much of them get arrested and sent to prison. Its nearly impossible to talk within reason to these 18000+ supporters because of this.
Now, for tourists, you don't see much of this, if at all. But I think it should be good information to know if you actually buy property here and spend a lot of time on the island outside of the tourism circles.
Apologies if being too specific with Aruban politics is against the rules, but thought it important for context - its getting worse everywhere compared to how its been in the past.
