    Summer Trip to Cooler Climates

Tomorrow evening we head to a hotel by the airport. We are flying out Wednesday, July 17 just after noon to Vancouver(layover in Phoenix). We will spend a day doing the Hop On Hop Off Bus in Vancouver and another day doing a tour to Victoria. On Saturday we board the Royal Princess for a 7 day Alaskan cruise, followed by an 8 day Princess land tour which ends in Fairbanks. We have rented a car and will spend a few extra days in Fairbanks, then drive back to Denali for several nights before heading to Anchorage for a few night with a stop(we think) in Talkeetna on the way. We fly from Anchorage to Seattle and spend the night before heading home on August 13. We have been to 49 states and Alaska will be our 50th. We are very excited. The past month has been unbearably stressful on me, but I believe(hope and prayer) that the situation is over with and I(we) can enjoy this trip. Thanks to all the people on this site who gave me advice. I'll post about the trip and pictures along the way when I can.

Have a wonderful time. We love Alaska almost as much as we love Aruba. Be sure to get off of the ho ho bus in Vancouver at Granville Island and go to the markets. Victoria is gorgeous. The flowers there are amazing. If you get the chance to go to Talkeetna, you'll enjoy it. It's a cool little town. Nothing tops Denali. It is incredible! I look forward to hearing about your adventures.

lol. Being a wanderer must be a genetic thing. Our older son and his gf are in Bali now, then Switzerland, Poland, Greece and Croatia. He is using his required 4 week sabbatical and 2 weeks of vacation and will be working part of the time(7 1/2 weeks total) and his gf left her job and is starting grad school. Since they are moving from DC to Evanston, Ill. all their stuff is in storage and they are not paying rent for two months.

After having dinner at one of our favorite places at home, David dropped us off at the hotel by the Philadelphia Airport. Our flight wasn't until 12:20 pm the next day, but there is a lot of construction going into Philadelphia and we figured it would be easier to stay at the hotel-a lot less rushed and a lot less traffic in the evening. We headed to the airport a little early 9:30 and it quieter than I had ever seen it. No one at check-in or TSA pre check. We spent the next two hours in the Centurion lounge before heading to our gate. The flight to Phoenix was uneventful. In PHX we headed to the lounge, which is in a temporary space. Stayed there until our flight to Vancouver which was uneventful. I must have had the worst seat on the plane-it took the flight attendant 5 times to reset my screen because "entertainment" was not on it. I tried to recline my seat and it was stuck upright. We flew through costumes and immigration and our bags were on the belt when we got there. We made our way to the car rental desk. Stu was wearing a shirt from a car show in the town next to us. A couple walked up behind and loudly said the name of the town in a questioning tone. Turns out they live in the town next to ours but came in on a different flight-it is a small world. We checked into our hotel in Richmond and went to sleep.

Today we did the Hop On Hop Off bus. We got to see a good part of the city of Vancouver. We only got off twice-Grandville Island and Gastown. I wasn't feel great after lunch(on Grandville Island). My shoulders and back were so stiff. I think it was a combination of the flight, heavy carry-ons and the bus seats. We headed back to Canada Place to pick up the car. By the time we got out of the parking garage my shoulders and back started to relax. Dinner was at a place I found on Yelp-Silkwood Halal Chinese. It is mostly Chinese but with a twist of middle eastern and/or Indian. An example is the dish hubby had-cumin noodles with lamp. I simply had sweet and sour chicken. It was great. We decided to return our car early, so we headed to the airport to take care of that and then picked up the shuttle to the hotel. We had planned to use the car tomorrow and return it Saturday, however; we decided to go on a tour to Victoria tomorrow. They pick us up and drop us off and it is all day. It really makes getting to the port much simpler on Saturday morning-just take a taxi from the hotel.

Sounds like a wonderful start except the flight issues. Were you flying American? If you have issues like that in the future, ask the flight attendant for compensation in the form of frequent flyer miles. They are authorized to do that for bad seats, IFE, etc.
