    Travel Elsewhere

We are headed to Alaska in a few weeks-a few days in Vancouver, 7 day Princess cruise and 8 day Princess land tour then we are renting a car in Fairbanks(where the land tour ends) spending a few days there, going back to do more at Denali then on to Anchorage for a few days, then an overnight in Seattle(much, much better flight times than Anchorage to Philly and less expensive). I appreciate the help I have had from the people on this forum.

I had mention that we were going to go to Italy in September. That was cancelled because she did not have enough people for the tour. Since my cousin's son is getting married then, I can now attend the wedding(I didn't know the date until a few weeks ago).

    Next summer:
We are planning what is turning out to be an eastern European trip and I am wondering if anyone here has done anything like what our trip seems to be evolving into. It started out as doing Viking river boat from Bucharest to Budapest. Now it seems like we will:
Start off in Warsaw for about a week(?). We will book a private tour to my dad's hometown which is 120 km south of Warsaw. Another day we will go to Treblinka-that is where my dad's family(whole town was liquidated and taken there) died. Another day would be Auschwitz, then tours around Warsaw or other areas. We we then fly to Bucharest and spend a day or two before joining Viking(the first two days you are in a hotel then the ship for 7 and hotel in Budapest for 2). Once in Budapest we would spend the a day or two extra. Next, I'm not sure. My first thought was to fly to Prague, but I was looking at the map and thought maybe we can take the train and see the countryside. Since it goes through Vienna, spend a few days there before heading to Prague for a few days then fly home. Stu doesn't care what I plan(we chose the cruise together) but he is leaving everything else up to me-itinerary, dates of travel, where we are going. I'm sure when it comes time to booking or choosing specific tours he'll want to be part of that.

I'd love to hear if anyone else has been to these places or has any ideas or suggestions.

We have spent ample time over the last couple of years in both Prague and in and around Salzburg (the city and the lakes area.) Let me know if you have any questions. We have not done tours except maybe a day trip here or there when a tour for the day seems wise for historical information (like when we did a day trip to Dachau). Otherwise, we research and travel independently. We generally stay in one country (two at the most) for 2-3 weeks to get to know the area and immerse ourselves with the locals and use one or two cities as our base for the entire trip.

We have also spent a lot of time in Italy (sometime we rent an apartment and sometimes stay at a hotel depending on the length of stay) so let me know f you have any questions. More than happy to help.

My accountant and his wife are taking a Viking River Cruise, first time for them, in August, I think. I think it leaves out of Amsterdam. I'll see what they say when they get back.

The reason I want to do the tours coming out of Warsaw is that we do not want to drive there and you usually get more info from the guide. My dad, aunts, and uncles only spoke Polish when they did not want any of us knowing what they were talking about, so the only words I know are some foods and "bad words". Our travel agent can set us up with a private tour guide like she did in Thailand. My cousin's son went to my dad's hometown and they struggled because English is not widely spoken there. Poland is a "heritage/ancestry trip" for me and I don't want to miss what is important. The other tours are really the excursions from Viking. We probably will just do our own thing in the other cities. We usually do the research and do our own thing, but this is one I want a private guide.

    Thanks for the info.

We did the Rhine leaving Amsterdam in the summer of 2017. We loved Viking and the amazing personalized service and the concept of with less than 200 passengers. As much as we are looking forward to the Alaskan trip, we are not thrilled with 3400 other passengers.
