Morning Everyone! I wanted to ask everyone's experience/opinions about the healthcare available to you in Aruba for those living there either part or full time, Pluses/Minuses you've experienced. Thank you in advance!

A few years ago my husband injured himself while scuba diving and got a severe laceration. We ended up at the hospital ER in San Nicolas. The care he received was great. They cleaned out the wound, numbed it, stitched it up, gave him a tetanus shot. Also a prescription for antibiotics to be filled at the pharmacy next door to the hospital. The hospital isn't as "up to date" looking as our U.S. hospitals, but the care was wonderful. We were worried about how much the bill would be because they expect payment before you leave the hospital. All said our complete bill for everything was $148!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My island friends tell me the regular doctor care in Aruba is wonderful but they often have to send people off the island for rare illnesses as they don't have the ability to treat certain things on the island because of the lack of certain specialists.
Trip 33 begins on July 15.

My husband and I have been treated for minor illnesses in the clinic on Palm Beach. Dr. Martinez is a very thorough physician. Her fees are lower than treatment in the states and Rx’s very reasonable. If the need arose For treatment of anything serious, I feel the care would be acceptable.

This year hubby had a cold before New Years Eve. We got here on the 6th and he got worse. On Thursday he went to the urgent care in Noord. It was quick and the doctor was very good. He has various medical issues and she didn't miss a beat with all his issues and meds. It was $150 for the doctor and $114 total at the pharmacy near us for a prescription cough med, antibiotic and inhaler. The inhaler is over $240 alone at home.

Last year our neighbor above us(she's in her early 80s) fell and broke her leg in 4(?) places-both the tiba and fibula. She need a rod and plates and screws. She spent about 10 days in the hospital and then went right to the airport from there. Once at home she went to the hospital and the doctors there were very happy with the care she had here and she several medical issues. We visited her here in the oldest, yet to be renovate part of the hospital-6 manual beds in one room. I felt like I stepped back into a different era. I understand the new section is up to date.

I do know that there are some things that Aruba's hospital and or therapies cannot handle.
One of my friends brings his son to Children's hospital in Miami for specialized care for the child.
Another friend has a daughter with CP and they have gone to Colombia for medical care and therapy for her.
I know that the care that these kiddos get in Aruba is terrific, but they are very good a getting the referrals for outside Aruba.

Another young man that was only an acquaintance was sent to Amsterdam for cancer therapies.
Sadly, there was no cure for him and he died a few months ago in Aruba.
AIDTM THINK.. is it Thoughtful? Helpful? Inspirational? Necessary? Kind?
