    Amex foreign transaction fee

Just got a letter from American Express. As of May 1, 2014 they will no longer charge a foreign transaction fee. WHOO WHOO.

That's good news for overseas travelers. I have never been charged anything but USD in Aruba.

I know of one business in Aruba which puts AMEX transactions through as US dollars and Visa/Master Card as foreign. Found out the hard way. Really do love AMEX.

When I started getting foreign transaction fees I started putting more money in the Aruba fund money jar !!!
i use the card to secure room and car then pay cash when I leave.
here at home when I pay cash I give bills only, even if for example my bill was 2.11.....then I put all change in jar. Amazing ow quickly that jar fills up !

The fee was not charged in Aruba as long as the charge went through as U.S. Dollars but they used to charge the fee in Europe. We always used to use Amex in Aruba and Capital One in Europe. But now it appears we can use Amex for all of our travels which is great.

Along with what Amy said, in the past, in Aruba if you were an AMEX cardholder and the merchant put the charge through as Florins you were charged the foreign transaction fee. Or at least it happened to us.

I am happy this will no longer be an issue. The addition of EMV (Smart) Chips to Delta AMEX SkyMiles Credit Cards is just an added bonus!
