I would never have thought that the islands had to pay a cruise line per head for passengers who go ashore. Seems crazy but of course there will be very few cruise ships for a while.
what is best in life ?
Is there a way to read this without a NYT subscription ?
I thought the cruise ships paid to dock. Interesting article and so much of it is true. Maybe building will slow down now on Aruba.
the cruise ships DO pay to dock.
I did a little investigating and NO there is no fee paid by Aruba to the cruise lines for the passengers that go ashore.
however there ARE fees paid from vendors/local companies, such as DePalm, and Jewelry stores and many others to the cruise company for promoting their tours. I have been on numerous cruises that had a stop in Aruba and DEPalm is one of their HUGE vendors. I would say that of those that get off the ship and go on an excursion..................probably 80% of those utilize a DePalm tour/adventure.
