Checking for Liquor at Airport Aruba Customs

Are they still checking out bags when you do final walk out of airport checking for booze or is it hit or miss. Duty free is such a great deal. That sin tax on liquor is crazy in Aruba. At least $10 bucks more than in US per bottle.

It's been hit or miss every time we've passed through. Have we ever determined just what the duty is if you bring in over the allotted amount of booze?

I agree with Walt. When we came in on a Thursday, there were flights from Miami, and somewhere not US/Canada and two flights from NY area. There was a long line and they were checking, but right before we rounded the corner, they stopped checking. I don't know if it is because the flights they wanted to check were already through or the line was too long or if they were going on a break. I do have to say, that so far we have never been checked on the direct flight from Philly, but one through Miami we were checked.

We were only"asked" once, never checked. We were told by the cashier at Duty Free, that is still much cheaper to purchase more than the limit, then to buy it on the island. Would be nice to find out what the actual is. From our experience in pricing, I don't doubt the cashier. Hope someone can chime in.

Not sure if this is the correct rate for booze.

We got hit up once before. It wasnt just the extra money, it was the long line to pay the tax. They send you into a back room with the other sinners. We probably broke even. It is not a better deal to do it.

It seems as though the pages on "Tariff import duties" covers this. However it is 380 pages long written in Dutch. Maybe one of our Dutch or Aruban members can translate enough to determine what percentage is charged for liquor over 1 liter.

We find getting Duty Free in Newark airport is a better deal than Duty Free in Aruba. Newark always seems to have some deal on two of the same type bottles of booze. Aruba Duty free is definitely better than buying on island.
