We landed and on the way to the resort, I must admit that the sight was a strange one, almost otherworldly – I think, never having been anywhere but earth.
There we were, Family and new friends on the way to our resort. Cars honked as they crawled on tar, exhaust pipes fed the air for exhausted people to breathe while walking aimlessly from store to store. In the front yard of our governmental offices sits a long trailer with a sign that says “I – (A heart) – Aruba.” Visitors are lined up to take pictures of wives, husbands, families or the ever so famous SELFIE on a long stick. Not long ago we all used those things to talk to each other and marveled at the Star Treks communication devices. Today, APPS, not Apes, rule and we can take SELFIES. Amazing is that the darned word does not come up as misspelled on my lap-top. Such is life I suppose.
The taxi that was crawling came to a dead stop as did the cars in front of us and those in back. To the left we could see that the ocean is littered with huge parked yachts, Sail boats and floating crafts to make up an aquatic Odds and Ends. Last night’s baked beans didn’t agree with one of the boys who were both pretending to be asleep. Such is life.
Showcases glitter with armbands that cost as much as a modest economy car and gold watches that make up more than 50% of a modest home. But then again, the shoppers entering those doors do not drive economy cars or live in modest homes. It is the supreme tease, the One-Up-Mans-Ship of the century. I decide to walk in and out of every one of them and buy nothing. Just to be mean. Then laugh at the folly I am planning.
City freedom up ahead. The traffic is loosened up and moving. We are heading back to what we know is the reality we came for. Two Seaside supermarkets wiz by and the lanes split. The high rises speak to us of calm and of a dream we have waited to live for almost a year. We do this yearly. The only difference being the ride through town. It slows us down a bit more each year. Or so it seems.
Friendly faces greet us and the room is as we left it. The view is magnificent and the best way to put all of these feeling together is that – We feel we are home at last.
It’s kind of like teenagers that have gone off to school and then are on their own. They always come back for some of Moms cooking. Don’t they? We do. Moms cooking is white sands between our toes, a bit too much sun, the smell of salty water, a walk from nowhere to nowhere and not giving a damn about it. Moms cooking is all of that and more.
Aruba is Moms cooking
With a pinch of salt.
