Please post any pertinent information regarding the Corona/COVID19 virus here. Please try to refrain from posting any information that is based on "I heard from a guy/friend/bartender, etc." This is a very serious topic and we are starting a thread here in "General" to get maximum exposure to the most visitors to the forum. If you have information that can be confirmed through Aruba/US/European government or other reliable sources please share it with us in this thread. Andrea and I will be moderating this thread heavily and will remove any posts that are speculation, confusing or panic causing. We all are concerned about Aruba as our first home, or our second, and want to make sure the most accurate, up to date information is available. If required, you can start a new thread in "off topic" to address concerns over the lack of toilet paper in your city and other crazy things that are going on during this most serious time of our lives. Thanks for your understanding and patience as we work through this. Be safe, be healthy.. Walt

Thank you Walt and Andrea.

Even though most Arubans themselves don't know much about this forum as its geared specifically towards our visitors, I speak for all of them in saying thank you for keeping the forum clean so the people that need the info can get it. Again, thanks, you two are doing Aruba a service.

Thank you Walt.

If any of you would like to put together any questions that the WHO, the CDC and the Health Requirements (listed in the blue banner at top of this page) has not made clear to you...send them by PM to Walt or I and they will be forwarded to my contact person re: COVID at the ATA office.

I had been having trouble posting all day.
Anyone else having issues posting or timing out?

If Walt and I have to, we will make every posting in this thread under moderation..........meaning it will not be visible to all until Walt or I pull it out of moderation and approve its placement here. (meaning no speculations, no made up stories, ). So please, b4 you post please make sure that you can back up your link or your statement provided. (Gosh, it sounds like a real dictatorship and we are sorry...you know we are not Nazi like.)

Bottom line as Walt says, this thread is now our ONLY Corona thread and all upcoming Corona/Covid 19 posts will be merged here and it has to be all ARUBA related. Speculation and non Aruba Covid 19 talk can be on FB and Instagram and other forms of social networking. Let this place serve as Aruba related Covid 19 posts.

Again if you have any questions, feel free to PM and we can pass this questions on and find an answer.

We are supposed to arrive March 21st and stay for a week at Divi Golf. We are still willing to make the trip, but are weighing the situation more cautiously with each new day as the situation evolves. We are not concerned with catching the virus in Aruba. We are concerned however with the possibility that Arubans might prefer that tourists stay away for the time being. Or that beaches and other public spaces might be closed for containment measures.
Does anyone on the island have anything to say on this issue?
Have you noticed a reduction in arrivals?

Good afternoon Andrea, Walt and everyone else,

Thank you both for doing this. It is so greatly appreciated.

Below is the link to the Government of Canada's website, specifically Global Affairs' travel advice. For those of us still here, it is strongly advised that all none-essential outside of Canada be postponed until further notice. Further all Canadians abroad (Including those in Aruba.) should return home by commercial means as soon as possible. Travel restrictions between Canada and other countries (Including Aruba) can change quickly and with little warning.

Andrea, Walt; no editorializing here from me on this. It is just too serious for that.

I hope this can be posted.

This is what I'm wondering as well because we are to arrive the 21st too. Been watching the forum closely and will continue to do so because I know Andrea and Walt will keep us all updated as much as they can. As of this moment, we are still planning to go. Bon nochi. The info we have up to now indicates that the Gov will be issuing a lockdown for all inbound passengers for the island. This means that we will need to arrange relief flights in the coming days to fly out the stranded passengers. As soon as we have the details we will share this. But please start planning accordingly as we will expect a rush of pax at the airport tomorrow to fly out

As it has in this country, it will now be profoundly affecting the every day reality for Arubans. My feelings go out to all my friends there. I can only imagine what things are going to be like there in the coming days and weeks. Things will be so surreal in the resorts, the restaurants, the casinos, etc. So sad!

It should be said that the information shared about the doctors, is REDO(hearsay). I would like to remind everyone again that Bati Bleki in Papiamento literally means "speaking hearsay". It is not known if the Doctor went to work or not. Nor is it smart to start instigating hatred against a person affected by the virus. Because that is what that article by Rona is doing.

24ora, the "source" used, is one of the worst news media on the island if you are looking for fact based reporting. They are more a kin to a British tabloid than an actual news organization.

We are here now at Playa Linda, which becomes more deserted by the day. Most folks we know are leaving by Saturday. Not much is open in Palm Beach. Skeleton staff at resorts . We have tried to overtip staff that we have come to know over the years. They will be suffering from almost a total lack of income for an indefinite amt of time. Some employees will continue to be paid a basic salary, we were informed by a dear friend who works at Pelican Pier. Please keep the citizens of Aruba in your thoughts and prayers. THEY are the ones who make us all long to come back to this beautiful island

I went to SuperFoods this morning for stropwafles, gouda, wipes for the plane, etc. Workers were outside. They were only letting a specific number of people into the store at a time. You had to take a cart, which they were wiping down, to insure people kept their distance from one another. Next I went to the rum store, which is shut up tight and finally I was able to get my car washed.

I'm certainly glad I can now open my window and have peace again, zero cars, less pollution and you can actually hear the bird singing again like I used to hear when I was a kid. I will be honest I have done pretty well till the last 20 minutes or so. I am sad....my heart breaks for everyone who has been "touched" with this awful illness and sadly its touching all of us one way or another. I have spent the last hour or so chatting with my "Aruba family" that has reached out to me again today. These people are beyond amazing to me. They are locked down by 9pm, out of work and not sure when they will be back, but they are reaching out to me to make sure my family is doing okay through all of this crap.....I pray things change quickly so we can return to Aruba and support our friends. Sadly days like today make me realize why I love Aruba so much...the wonderful people have made us feel like we are family/belong there. This situation has only made me love Aruba even more...to see the outpouring of love from our friends is beyond amazing. My wife is almost shocked....all the voice mails end with I love you....miss you... be safe and these are from my guy friends. My wife asks me...have any of your American friends ever said they loved you and my answer was of course no....I have had 4 of them today. The emotions/relationships are beyond anything I could have imagined and I ache thinking about the stresses our friends are going through right now.

here is Rona's take on the most update from Prime Minister Evelyn Never Croes

The MinPres update:There was one additional positive test result today.
This brings Aruba's total to 9 confirmed cases (8 still on island).
All 9 have had mild symptoms are in good condition.
There are about 600 people in self-quarantine (mostly residents that have returned).
• The last two confirmations are a result of local transmission, as both are residents that have not traveled in a while. The fact that there is local transmission, makes social distancing even more important than ever.
• A decision has been made to allow the locals that are stuck abroad to return to Aruba. This is being coordinated by A.T.A.
• More rigorous control will start on those that are in self-quarantine.
Attorney General office regarding curfew:
31 people were arrested during Curfew hours last night (9pm-6am).
29 received fines of AFL 1,000, of which 2 received an additional fine for resisting arrest.
The fine increases when a person is caught the second time.
Note that the curfew counts for the ocean as well. No boats can be out during 9pm and 6am.
Police:
Enforcement of curfew is strict and firm.
A.T.A. regarding local residents trying to come home:
Registration with A.T.A. is necessary to get help.
There are 210 people registered so far.
Numbers for assistance and registration: 569-6897, 568-9251, 563-7928
Health Dept:
The residents that return will need to self-quarantine for 14 days.

Anrdrea is the fine 1000 florins or 10,000 florins? 2 messages I received today talked about a 10k florin fine that equaled right about 6k USD. Either would be a lot to be fined with...Aruba is not messing around...I wish the US would take the same approach.

I don't know.
Maybe Arawak will have the info.

I think 10K fine is incredibly unreasonable for the normal person who is out just a little bit after curfew....however, a wonderful deterrent.
One of the ATA employees who I converse with almost daily lately..........he and his wife are not even allowing the kids to play outside in their walled in yard.
My understanding is most EVERYONE is staying HOME and sheltering in place.

The bartender at Mathew's said it was 10,000 Afl, but I haven't read anything formally.

Hi all!

People here are sometimes known to leave out details, so when something sounds very unreasonable, it probably is most of the time :D

The fine for individuals during the curfew is of a MAXIMUM of 10.000 Florins. First time offenders of the curfew will get a 1000 Florin fine. For businesses this fine is up to a maximum of 1000 Florins. In this case it also sounds unreasonable the difference between individuals and businesses and that's why above I mentioned "most of the time" and not all the time :D

The reason they explained for the discrepancy is that the emergency laws how they are written in the books are very antiquated and come from different times. Thankfully though, it dsnt seem that businesses are pushing their luck.

But since it was posted at 14h08 it's probably when the plane arrived empty as the plane left Aruba gate around 16h41.

We have friends who are struggling to get out of Aruba. They were supposed to be on Delta to JFK on Monday. It was cancelled. Confirmed for today then Delta cancelled again. Now they are flying from Aruba to Atlanta to JFK. So stressful.

From Rona:
Three more cases added today for a total of 12 with one recovered. Two of the three were infected locally, one in Columbia. All three are doing well and the youngest is 25 years old. The Prime Minister has called on everyone to stay home and only go out if completely necessary, for example pharmacy or grocery store. Starting tomorrow all restaurants must close, except those offering take out, delivery, or drive through.

According to the government, they have adapted the testing procedure following the WHO guidelines of "test test test". Meaning more people get tested daily which in turn leads to more positive results. Hopefully they all stay with mild symptoms so the hospital stays free of patients for as long as possible.

I noticed that it was 17 cases positive out of 267 total tests so that works out ~6.4% of all tests, to date, were positive. That is a good sign and trending less than the USA where the positive test rate is ~10%.
My hopes are that the COVID-19 virus does not tolerate the hot temperatures of Aruba well.
(initial reports indicate it lives the longest (out of the body) in cool dry climates).

9 more positive tests today bringing the total up to 28. This jump was expected given the new "test test test" regime. The hospital emergency room also went from 12 to 21 beds. Only 1 patient of 71 years old is currently receiving care in the hospital because of breathing difficulties.

"Shelter in place" will be active on 12:00 AM Sunday.

It is also rumored that the Zr.Ms. Karel Doorman will be making its way to the Caribbean area. This ship was used in the aftermath of hurricane Irma and has extra emergency ICU beds with a designed area for quarantine.

From Rona:

Update: There are 28 confirmed cases on Aruba. Note that more tests are done, the more the confirmed cases will increase.
6 of the new cases were from one location, a "cluster", at "Respaldo" (Care center for mentally challenged). 5 of them were employees.
Most of new ones are mild, 2 have recovered.
Social distancing is essential.
New government decisions:
As of Sunday, all on Aruba will impose "shelter in place".
No one is allowed to leave the house.
Exceptions are for trips to: supermarket, restaurant takeaway/drive thru, doctor, pharmacy, or for an exercise activity (while keeping 2 meter distance from others).
Shelter in Place rule is for at least 2 weeks.
Specific details of Shelter in Place will be announced tomorrow.
Border will close again for local residents as of Sunday.
Curfew:
There will be new filters for exceptions to curfew, which are in process of being determined. This means they will reduce the type of jobs that can receive these exceptions. No details yet.

my thought........as Mohair posted there are still 100 tourists left on the island.
the residents will be on shelter in place with only leaving the house briefly for essential services.
the tourists remaining.......are they allowed to go to the beach or do they need to follow the rule that has been set up?

Arawak
03-27-2020, 09:33 AM
Everyone on the island needs to follow the shelter in place order. The 100 tourists or less remaining are in the same boat as everyone else. You are allowed to go outside for exercise and you can do this at the beach if you like, as long as you are keeping it safe (3 is a crowd and maintain 2m/6ft distance at least from everyone else).

Stay safe everyone

Most airlines don't have anything scheduled. I am willing to bet that the deadline will be extended due to the fact the pandemic is not under control. It is my understanding Aruba only has 12 ventilators and knows it is ill equipped to handle large numbers of Covid19 patients.

Here is the latest (3/27) directive from the Aruba government:

The number of infections in Aruba has risen by nine to 28 in the past 24 hours. Due to the rapid increase, the government has taken measures and the entire population, a total of 106,000 people, can no longer leave the house as of Sunday morning.

That has been announced by Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes. It is a system of "shelter in place", where people stay at home as much as possible, but are still allowed to shop for food and medicines and exercise outside.

Mohair, I suggest to you not to use any Dutch websites as sources for what is happening on Aruba. Dutch media is always 1 or 2 or more steps behind when it comes to the up to date information. They also tend to get things wrong because they don't always verify the information with official sources before publishing.

The current cases are up to 33 with 330 people testing negative. https://www.arubacovid19.org/

We received this from the manger of Oceania. We already had turned off our hot water heater and have our air on 25c.

Dear Owners
Taking into account the situation that is occurring due to the COVID -19 pandemic. We have taken the following measures to minimize expenses on the property.
· In the corridors area, the lights will be switched on in an interleaved manner (one on and one-off).
· The Water company's supply is being used only for the supply of water in the complex, keeping the pumps off because of the low occupancy (practically 10%).
· The maintenance companies of the gardens, as well as the swimming pools, were asked to reduce the activities to reduce the operating costs to save in their monthly payment.
· This week, all the people in charge of the apartments have been informed to turn off the water heaters, turn off the water supply and put the air at a cool temperature to avoid unnecessary current consumption to help save on your monthly bill.

They are paying everyone their normal salary for the months of April, May and June even though the government says they do not have to do so. She also said most people are happy getting credit for future stays and only 5% are demanding their money returned. She said she goes grocery shopping about once a week, but there are still too many idiots, which she called (cov)idiots (I love that term).

News just came in that 14 people have recuperated! Counting the 1 from yesterday, these are the first ones to have recuperated since the first one(the American who was flown to California). Aruba has been incredibly lucky so far with no deaths. We are the only island in the Caribbean with 20+ cases(15+ islands) and above who have yet to record a death by covid-19.

The reason they took this long to recover is that according to the minister of health, we have a very sensitive type of test used that many other countries are not using. As such it takes longer for the test to come out with zero traces of the virus.

Latest update

Update April 11th, 2020 | 2 pm

COVID-19 Update
• 92 positive
• 29 recovered: therefore 63 active cases
• 1026 negative
• 1118 tested
• 109 in quarantine
• Youngest 6 years - oldest 79
• Hospital: 2 remain in ICU

Shelter in Place on Easter holiday:
• Easter Sunday and Easter Monday everything is closed. Exceptions: gas stations (7am – 7pm) , food take away/delivery (11am – 7pm) and doctor, pharmacy.
• Watersports and fishermen boats are not allowed out during these two days
• Excercise is allowed, but avoid crowds. Swim at beach is allowed, go home immediately after.

Minister of Health:
• 12 additional ICU beds arrived from Netherlands. Aruba now has 33 ICU beds.
• Aruba strategy is working based on more active testing, isolation of positive cases, good contact tracing and quarantine measures.
• More tests have been ordered.
• An app has been developed and will be launched to help control quarantine, isolation, and contact tracing.
• An exit strategy can not be considered until contagion rate is under control, recovery of positive patients, adequate hospital capacity exists.
• Aruba is developing guidelines for the next steps.
• Aruba is one of few countries that will do tests with convalescent plasma treatment, as there is evidence it could be an effective treatment for critical patients. The treatment will be handled by Specialist Dr. Zaheeb Choudry.

Dr. Zaheeb Choudhry, Internist Nephrologist:
• Convalescent plasma therapy involves transfusing certain components from the blood of people who have had the COVID-19 virus and recovered into people who are very sick with the virus or people who are at high risk of getting the virus. This treatment helps them recover faster.
• International protocol is that you must wait 14 days after a positive patient has recovered before they can donate their blood. Aruba tests will involve plasma that has a certain amount of antibodies. Only plasma from men will be used and the blood/ plasma transfusion will follow existing protocols, with assistance of Aruba Blood Bank.
• Aruba will share data and results with other countries also doing these tests. Plasma treatment has existed for over 50 years; and is now being used to do test treatments on COVID-19 patients.
