    One and Done

Do you have a "One and Done" story?

It does not have to be a negative experience ...just an experience that once is enough.

    This is for Culinary/Culture only.

There is another thread in the "Aruba General" category for "other" than Culinary.

My one and done was seared tuna at Aqua Grille some years ago..... I just couldn't do it....! I'll eat all the raw oysters and clams you can put in front of me..... but just couldn't do the tuna!

Since 1980, and throughout the many changes, we still love going downtown in Oranjestad.

    Hi Andrea,

Thanks for this double dose of "One and Done" because our O&D experiences pretty much all relate to our culinary adventures. I have a couple of these.

And to everyone else; remember that because this deals with restaurant experiences, it is just an opinion. Don't go a*****t if it sounds like I've dissed your favourite place.

    Okay, let's go.

    Charlie's Bar, San Nicholas.

Every place (including our own hometowns) has its share of over-rated spots and for Aruba it's this bar. After spending about half an hour in the place (This was about 20 years ago.) then fending off a couple of no-goodniks who were hanging around our car and trying to bother us, my wife and I couldn't get out of San Nicholas fast enough. Never been back. Never understood the appeal of this place to start with.

    Restaurant at California Lighthouse

Every Aruba vacation involves at least one drive up to the lighthouse. The views are spectacular. We went to the restaurant many, many years ago. The food was really good, the views were wonderful and the service was pretty good. But we were not alone at the restaurant. It seemed like every fly in Aruba had put the word out to join us for lunch. It ruined our lunch and no, we've never been back there either.

I'm sure there are other O&D dining experiences but these will do for now.

For us it would be Elements at the Bucuti. We were there for the Thanksgiving buffet and most of the food was just not warm enough. The hand carved turkey was decent but the desserts were their downfall. One bite of the pumpkin pie was more than enough so I moved on to the bread pudding and that proved no better. We have never gone back.

    hahahahaha "apepoop"

folks sometimes take things personally or are extremely sensitive or feel "picked on"
it is bizarre, indeed and your term ape"poop" is perfect.

Charlies Bar was a 3 and done for me.
My husband still likes the place.

I'm shakin' in my boots on this one because I know a lot of you adore this place, but my big "one and done" was Bavaria German (1st trip in 2015). Service was really slow (they were not busy at all), the potato pancakes were greasy, and the weiner schnitzel was really tough. But the beer was REALLY good! Okay, white asparagus lovers, bring it on! LOL!

    Hi Lisa,

We're with you on this. We hadn't been to Bavaria before so last October we gave it a try.

I found the Wiener Schnitzel just way too heavy. Friends of ours love it but I'm pretty sure it's on about our G or H list.

Zeerovers - great view and we enjoyed our time there, but it was a hike for fried seafood. I would rather go to Fish House if I'm making the drive.
Passions - been there done that and prefer other beachfront dining to them (Atardi or Elements - we liked both better)

Passions concerns me with the size of that little tiny kitchen on the beach. I cannot imagine how they handle all those meals safely.

I do not believe that the meals come from that kitchen.
