A visit to Alhambra Casino yesterday afternoon was a lucky one. I hit a royal flush on a video poker machine to the tune of $4000! It's just the latest bit of good luck in the casinos this trip. I have been on the plus side the entire trip, and the royal flush is the exclamation point.

I think today I will visit my resort's front office and pay next year's maintenance fees in cash from the winnings.

The win was the spark I needed to get back here and update my trip report, which I have been neglecting. I would have been checking in at some point to report that I umpired my first baseball game in Aruba since 2019. It was a Little League game in Pos Chiquito and it was fun. It was a nicely played, uneventful game -- just the way an umpire likes it!

I called balls and strikes from behind the pitcher's mound, rather than from behind the catcher, due to Covid protocols. That was a first in my 48 years of umpiring. It's not a good way of doing it, and last year I wouldn't umpire for any leagues that
did it that way. I made an exception for Aruba!

The only new place (for me) that I have dined at this trip is Bingo's. The filet mignon I had was outstanding.

It has been fun on several days this week to take drives with my friend and his daughters to see the "sights." One daughter has been to Aruba before; the other is on her first visit. It's always fun for Aruba veterans (my friend makes me looks like a "rookie" with my 37 trips) to see Aruba through the eyes of a newcomer!

My Covid test for the flight home is scheduled for this morning. I guess that means the trip is winding down.

Perhaps (but not promising) I will be back with an update at some point today or tomorrow. Otherwise, I will put together some thoughts and observations when I return home.

    That was a great win!!!!

I bet calling b/s from the mound was difficult.
Do they play 9 innings or 7?

Thank you for sharing your adventures with us.

This was the 10-12 age group. They play 6 innings at this level. We played 5 innings, as there is a time limit (1hr., 45 mins.) for their games. Both coaches were happy with me, and I felt I did fine.

Turn away if you don't like horror stories........

Here is the tale of my nearly 100-hour trip home from Aruba. I won't go into great detail, because I don't really want to relive it.

The Sunday afternoon flight out of Aruba was on time and uneventful until we were over Miami. We circled above for nearly an hour due to weather before being diverted to Tampa.

We spent about three hours on the ground in Tampa. We pulled up to a jetway, but nobody was allowed off the plane, including the couple across the aisle from me whose final destination WAS Tampa.

After refueling, we flew to Miami and encountered a disaster area. People everywhere, luggage everywhere, very few airline or airport employees, no information. It was a giant cluster-you-know-what.

It was an estimated six-hour wait to reach AA by phone, and the rebooking line at the airport looked to be at least four hours long, so I went online booked myself onto the earliest available flight -- Tuesdsay night at 9:25pm. I paid $350, and I have a feeling it will be an uphill battle trying to get reimbursed. We shall see.

My buddy (with his two daughters) had his wife back home make hotel arrangements for us, so we were ready to get out of that mess at the airport. Prior to leaving, though, I took ill and got sick in the bathroom. Somehow, I survived the Uber ride and the hotel check-in, but upon getting to my room, I became sick enough to eventually require an ambulance ride to the hospital, where I spent the next two nights suffering from colitis.

I needed to push back my flight to Hartford to Wednesday night. I arrived there around 1:00 a.m. Thursday, and was in no shape to make the two-hour drive home, so I stayed the night at a hotel there.

I finally arrived home midday Thursday, nearly 100 hours after beginning my journey.

Somehow it seems like my time in Aruba was a long time ago already......

    what a nightmare.
to add to the flight troubles add in the colitis and that makes it just over the top terrible.

I am so sorry that your awesome trip ended so terribly.

    feel better and take care!
