    Trip Report January 8 - January 15

We arrived on Wednesday, January 8. We were in our hotel room at the Hilton an hour and 15 minutes after landing. Doing the ED Form online did help with getting through the airport and our luggage came out quickly. I arranged a private transfer with WIX Tours and the driver was waiting for us. I used them the last time we were in Aruba (we had three different arrivals for that trip) and their service is great. We had dinner at Gilligan's which is the beach bar at the Hilton. They have opened it for dinner and the food is good. We also ate dinner at the Sunset Grill at the Hilton on Thursday night and the food was outstanding. The executive chef even came over to our table and greeted us.

We usually visit Aruba in September and we really noticed a difference in the weather on this trip. It rained almost every day a few times a day, the wind seemed stronger than usual and the ocean was rough. We spent most days on the beach as this trip was really about rest and relaxation.

On Friday we saw the Aruba Ray Comedy Show at the Holiday Inn and opted for the dinner and show package. Dinner was at Da Vinci and the food did not disappoint. It is a limited menu for the comedy show (choice of 3 appetizers, 3 entrees and two desserts) the portions are small but just enough food. The show was outstanding, I laughed until I cried. We both agreed that it was well worth the money and we will probably do it again on our next visit.

Saturday was another beach day and we had dinner with a couple we met when we arrived at our hotel. They were staying at the Marriott Surf Club and were on their way to Pure Ocean at the Divi Phoenix for dinner via the beach path when they stopped to ask us a question about the Hilton. It turned out that the wife is from the same town where my husband grew up (Congers, NY) and they now live in Cape Cod. We had dinner at Gianni's with them and again the food did not disappoint.

On Sunday we walked from our hotel to the California Lighthouse via the beach path to the end at the Ritz and then on the road. Along the way we visited our new friends at the Marriott and they showed us the grounds and their condo, which are very nice. There is a new sidewalk on the road to the lighthouse that is not yet finished and a new boardwalk off the sidewalk that winds around between the road and the ocean. After visiting the lighthouse, we walked down to Arashi Beach and were really surprised by the roughness of the ocean. The last time we were there (September 2018) the water was so calm and crystal clear and we were hoping for the same this visit. We had some drinks and lunch at the Arashi Beach Bar - their wings are delicious! We also learned that a tourist had drowned at Catalina Beach just prior to our arrival, which explained the ambulances and police cars that drove past us on our way to the lighthouse. We started walking back to the hotel but decided to catch a bus halfway there. Sunday night we had pizza at Joe and Giuseppe's.

Monday brought another beach day, the hubs decided to sit this one out. He got sun poisoning on his legs and decided to stay in the room. We had lunch at Lola (a new taco restaurant across from the Hilton). This was our second lunch there and although the tacos are fabulous, the service leaves a lot to be desired. We also had breakfast there one morning which was also good but the loud music they play in the morning is something we could do without. We stopped into the Aruba Aloe store next to the restaurant and picked up some Alhydran (medical lotion) and we saw a difference in just 24 hours. Monday night we had dinner at Smokey Joe's - not really impressed with the food and where they sat us (right on the sidewalk). It was very dark in that section and you cannot read the menu or see what you are eating. They would not seat us under the lights at a table for four because there were only two of us.

Tuesday was our last day and another beach day and we stayed to watch the sunset. We wanted to eat a Bugaloe on the De Palm Pier because they had live music and it looked like a fun place to spend our last night. It was very crowded and no open tables so we ate at Gilligan's at the Hilton. They have three tables under lights on the beach and it was the perfect way to spend our last night in Aruba.

We left on Wednesday, our flight was at 4:40 PM. We were picked up at the hotel at 1:15 and were through security and at our gate in little more than an hour. What a difference leaving mid-week compared to a Saturday.

We arrived in Albany at about midnight, just before it snowed and we were clearing the driveway twelve hours later. It is always good to come home! Eight months until our next trip to One Happy Island!

    Thanks for the read.

    Ellen

Thanks for the trip report, I always enjoy hearing how other are spending their time in Aruba!

Others who go this time of year will probably chime in, but from what I've been reading, it seems that it is rainy more than usual lately.

Sounds like a good trip and quality relaxation time. Sorry to hear you had to return home to snow!

It sounds wonderful. It has been very windy and more rain than usual for January and rougher seas. I can watch the white caps from my condo.

Thanks for sharing. Next time you want to go to Bugaloe on a night they have a band make a reservation as they all get reserved.
