    Cruise Dec. 24-Jan. 10

We are scheduled to go on the Viking Panama Canal and Coastal Holiday Cruise this Friday. I'm still waiting to see what happens. Last night they cancelled one of only 5 stops due to "local restrictions". I know one of the other stops is in a country that now requires everyone to be vaccinated, and I wonder if they will shut down completely. I am very nervous about this for several reasons.

    1. Even though everyone must show proof of vaccination(it was already uploaded and approved), must test two days before embarkation, are tested when we board and daily, must mask when not eating or drinking, all rooms have their own ventilation system, and we are(I am told) tracked to see who we come into contact with on the ship, Omicron is spreading like crazy. Yes, we are both vaccinated and boosted, but what will happen if we get sick? I've been coughing for a good 6 weeks from a bug Stu shared with me, but it could allergies or my GERD. Nothing seems to help it. I am hoping a warmer climate will make a difference.

    2. We have planned to spend 4 days in LA(cruise goes from Ft. Lauderdale to LA) visiting friends and family and some sightseeing. If LA decides to shut down restaurants, will we be able to change our flight? I am more concerned about how bad the virus will be in the US.

    3. What happens if the other countries we are scheduled to visit shut down? Will we spend 18 days at sea? Come back?

    4. We are scheduled to go to Aruba on Jan. 21. If the virus is bad, will we be able to get a test to go to Aruba?

    5. Am I worried too much or not enough?

Robin you certainly have a lot of decisions to make and just a few days to do it! Wish I could give you some guidance but I really feel only you and Stu can decide what level of risk you are comfortable with. Here in Mass, the Governor just came on recommending indoor masks but no mandate. Five hundred members of the National Guard have been called up to assist hospital staff across the state and all nonessential surgeries ordered cancelled.

On the good side, I guess, there are long lines for people getting vaccinated or testing. Hope this means at least some people are listening. Plus, they keep saying that people who have been boosted have a much lower risk of getting really sick.

Robin, we had that annoying cough for 8 weeks in LBI. I finally got a covid PCR test to prove to people we dont have covid. When it finally went away we thanked God. It will soon pass. Happy holidays.

We used Walgreens this morning at 930 and now have negative covid results. Looks like we're going.

I stopped taking all the prescription meds and my cough is getting better as is my GERD. I think they were making the GERD worse which was making the cough worse.

Yesterday we boarded the Viking Star in Ft. Lauderdale. Boarding took about 2 1/2 hours because the company they contracted to do nasal swabs only had two people show up(others were processing the tests). Viking is not messing around with Covid. As we entered the terminal, they did a temperature check, then we went through security. The first stop was to show proof of vaccine, which they manually recorded-each date and type of vaccine and we had to show our negative test results. Next was the very long line for the nasal swab, then we waited as a group for results-maybe 40 people at a time. The next stop was lanyards with contact tracers on them, keys, excursion tickets, photos and then on to the ship. Instead of a safety drill, they showed us how to put on the life jackets, then we were sent to our rooms and had to do a saliva covid test. Mask are required in all areas of the ship(not outside). They even provide them in our room along with sanitizer. We have to do the saliva test daily, an in app health survey daily and a daily temperature check. We left the port over 6 hours late because 1. flight delays 2. several people tested positive. They retested and still tested positive. Then they had to find the people next to them in line. At dinner to day a man walking through the dining room had his mask in his hand and one of the staff told him to put it back on. They do not mess with Covid here. The ship holds 930 and there is about 880 on the ship.

Today was a day at sea. It went by very fast. We have met some really nice people so far. A little less than half are doing the world cruise and once we reach LA, another 350 will get on for the world cruise once us Pamana Cruise get off. The ship is very nice-elegant. There is a beautiful spa which includes a snow grotto, a thermal pool and hot tub, steam room, sauna and cold plunge in addition to the regular spa services. A very well appointed fitness center. A few stores, several bars, several dining venues, hot tubs, pools and a theater and several other amenities. No casino. The food and service are amazing. Stu was happy to get lamb chops for breakfast.

    Tomorrow we are in Cozumel.

Thanks for updating us. That’s a lot of COVID testing but at least you know they’re working to keep everyone safe. Have fun.

I think that viking does not offer casino, just like the Disney cruises.

Most of the other cruise lines' true money makers are the casinos and alcoholic beverages!
On those cruise lines, if there was no casino or booze there'd be no cruise. (and no Andrea and Paul)
