South Carolina trip - not much of a report

We planned this trip just about 2 months before it happened. We had some friends going to Garden City Beach, SC - which is just minutes south of the main Myrtle Beach area. We've been before so decided to jump on a good deal and get a vacation in, just in case Aruba doesn't happen later this year. Jon and I planned on renting a condo, but when a couple other friends showed some interest we found a perfect oceanfront house with a pool that suited us all just fine. We had 6 adults and the most well behaved 2 and a half year old I have ever met. As someone without kids, I don't always enjoy them but this little one made the trip so fun. Watching her go from timidly walking down the steps of the pool to jumping from the side with no one there to catch her was awesome. I have to say the Garden City and Surfside areas have some great deals this time of year, starting around the 3rd week of August. We had very Aruba-like weather. It was really hot but with a breeze most days. It's a really relaxed area. We didn't plan on doing much more than hanging by the pool and eating some good food.

Things I learned - when you have the option of renting a house with a pool or not, always choose the pool. It was so worth it! We spent most days lounging by the pool. We went out to the beach for short periods, but it was so much more convenient to stay in the pool. The sand was basically hot lava to walk on. One day I also learned that I cannot drink as much Tito's as I once could..LOL.

Fishing - the 3 guys went on a fishing charter with Ambush Fishing Charters - and they all highly recommend the boat and captain for anyone in the area. They caught a bunch of Spanish mackerel and a few flounder. The captain told us to try the mackerel as sushi and it didn't disappoint with a little soy, wasabi, ginger and pepper. We have a lot of frozen fish now.

We ate out at the Marshwalk a couple times - Wicked Tuna (not as good as previous years for food or service) and The Claw House which was excellent. Both places seemed to have good covid protection in place, we felt comfortable. The Marshwalk is a touristy strip of bars and restaurants and usually is humming with activity, but this year was quiet, not too busy at all. I skipped the bar hopping night but a couple others said it was more of a subdued vibe than you would expect from previous years. The Garden City Pier had great music, but we heard from a friend it was packed so we didn't go. We could hear the bands from our house so we just sat by the pool.

Social distancing and covid precautions - South Carolina seemed to be more relaxed that my home area. The grocery store was pretty strict on masks, everywhere else was hit or miss. You could sit at bars shoulder to shoulder with no mask. Some bartenders had masks, others didn't. Its seemed that about 1/2 of the places we went to had people with masks and half didn't. I would say we let our guard down more than we should have, but for the most part we wore masks and stayed away from anywhere that looked crowded.

Tracey, it sounds wonderful and so glad you and Jon were able to get a break. I know life has been difficult lately. I hesitate to ask, but how is your stepmom doing?

Thank you for asking. She has been doing about the same - breathing on her own for short periods of time which is a good thing, but still in ICU. It seems like every couple days it is a step forward then another step back. Tomorrow will be 4 weeks since the initial fall. It is very unlikely she will walk again, the focus now is weaning her off the ventilator, which is a very slow process in her case.

That must be it, Walt! I will have to start working on my tolerance to be able to hang in November! I was excited to see our trips will overlap.
